Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) is the custodian of these landscapes, a critical role on behalf of all New Zealanders and overseas visitors who travel great distances to be amongst them.

QLDC are looking for a Senior Landscape Architect who will sit in a strategic role and be instrumental in influencing landscape outcomes of the resource consent process, including at the Environment Court, balancing the pressures of providing development with the protection of Outstanding Natural Landscapes.

About the opportunity
Reporting to the Manager Resource Consents the Senior Landscape Architect acts as the custodian of the districts outstanding picturesque landscapes. You will lead the landscape aspects of the Council resource consent process and provide expert advice on landscape assessments, ensure best practices, and liaise between resource consents and policy planning teams to uphold the integrity of the District Plan. In doing this you will:
  • Oversee landscape aspects of the resource consent process, ensuring compliance with District Plan provisions.
  • Provide expert advice and support on landscape assessments for resource consent applications.
  • Act as a key liaison between resource consents and policy planning teams on landscape matters.
  • Manage and review landscape assessments, including peer reviews, for resource consent applications.
  • Support Environment Court appeals by providing strategic landscape advice and if you desire expert testimony on landscape issues.
About you
You are a seasoned Landscape Architect with 7+ years of experience, particularly adept at handling sensitive landscapes and preparing comprehensive landscape assessments. Your expertise in the Resource Management Act (RMA) and its application to landscapes is complemented by your strong skills in visual assessment and resource consenting. You excel in translating technical jargon into clear, understandable language and are a proficient report writer. 

Your background includes peer reviewing landscape assessments, managing consultancy panels, and providing expert advice in Environment Court appeals. You are a problem solver who thrives in dynamic environments, ensuring that landscape projects balance development needs with the protection of natural beauty. Bringing best practices, consistency, and strategic guidance to landscape assessments, you are ready to make a significant impact on the future of Queenstown’s outdoor spaces.
