About the organisation

Established in 1989, Otago Regional Council (ORC) is responsible for managing Otago’s land, air and water resources on behalf of the community. ORC plays a critical role in supporting the sustainable management of the local environment.

With a continued focus on improving how it serves its communities, ORC is undergoing an exciting period of transformational change. With solid foundations already in place and a highly supportive leadership team, there are some significant targets to reach. This has resulted in growth for the People and Culture team and the need for a health, safety and wellbeing specialist to support management to positively impact on the HSW of the organisation.

About the opportunity

Reporting to the Manager People and Culture, this role will facilitate HSW excellence across all facets of the Otago Regional Council operations. Working closely with colleagues across the organisation, the Safety and Wellbeing Partner will enhance the capability of others while providing the organisation with valuable advice and support.

In doing this, the Safety and Wellbeing Partner will:

  • Coach, support and provide advice at all levels of the organisation, ensuring others are well equipped and confident to positively and proactively manage the health, safety and wellbeing of their teams and meet the requirements of the organisation.
  • Primary responsibility for operational HSW requirements including audits and other regulatory compliance; ensuring best practice risk management; facilitate and deliver relevant H&S training.
  • Provide leadership in the development of health and safety systems and processes to ensure robust reporting and measurement of key performance indicators.
  • Provide thorough and clear reporting to senior management and ensure all health and safety administration is completed in an efficient and comprehensive way.

This role requires a solid understanding of workplace health and safety together with the ability to engage with and influence others to improve their knowledge of and approach to HSW within the workplace.

About you

An exceptional communicator with the ability to connect with and understand your internal customers; you will be happy working alongside senior leaders, as well as operating in the field and providing hands-on guidance and support to operational teams and managers. You will be flexible, adaptable and like “rolling up your sleeves” to get the job done. A focus on best practice and process efficiency; you will enjoy refining and implementing streamlined methods for accurately managing health and safety within the workplace.

With proven experience as a health and safety professional within a relevant or similar industry, you’ll be described as an engaging business partner, a self-starter who can work autonomously and in a team environment. Of vital importance is that you will be self-motivated with a high level of positivity, resilience and an ability to remain calm under pressure.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is ready to make this role their own; taking the lead and being involved in a wide range of HSW projects including the implementation of a new H&S management system and the creation of an organisational wellbeing framework. If this role has sparked your interest and you feel you have the skills to match, we want to hear from you.
