About the organisation
At the Otago Regional Council (ORC), their mission is ‘for our future’. ORC is here to protect and enhance the environment and enable their communities to do the same. The Environmental Monitoring Team is a core function at ORC, providing vital information to other parts of the organisation and customers to support the management of Otago’s natural resources. ORC needs a technically savvy and engaging people leader to take on the Manager Environmental Monitoring role and lead this function – could this be you?

About the opportunity
Reporting to the General Manager Strategy, Policy and Science, the Manager Environmental Monitoring is an integral member of the leadership team of the Strategy, Policy and Science Group, tasked with leading a team of technical specialists who provide good practice environmental monitoring services, ensuring that ORC meets customer expectations and the future environmental management needs of the region. In doing this, the Manager Environmental Monitoring will:

  • Provide effective leadership to the diverse and experienced team while being a champion of change – ensuring all team members are engaged, supported and achieving their individual and team goals.
  • Contribute to and drive strategic planning processes - ensuring ORC’s environmental monitoring programme is future proof, expertly delivered and aligns with broader organisational objectives and the expectations of the Otago community.
  • Create a robust and accessible knowledge base of Otago’s environment and natural resources.
  • Deliver environmental monitoring services for ORC including State of the Environment and flood monitoring for Otago.
  • Develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships - ensuring relationship management and engagement with key stakeholders and the community.
  • Drive operational performance -  ensuring delivery of environmental monitoring programmes while maintaining essential functionality and services within regulatory frameworks.
  • Contribute as a high performing member of the Strategy, Policy and Science Group - supporting overall planning and execution of operational initiatives.

This role needs a capable leader who can combine strong, visible leadership and exceptional partner engagement while driving performance. Is this you?

About you
To be successful in this role, you will be more than capable of operating within a rapidly changing environment; leading teams through periods of change will be a core skill set developed throughout your career. You will hold a relevant tertiary qualification (e.g. Bachelor of Science or similar) and be an experienced and proven leader, ideally with exposure to managing multiple business units and/or possibly within local government. Your project management expertise and knowledge of Health and Safety will be a given. As a leader, you see workplace culture as being highly powerful in shaping individual, team and organisational performance and you maintain accessibility and visibility for your people as a matter of course. Your approach to communicating both internally and externally will set you apart as an achiever in this role as will your whole-of-organisation approach to everything you do.

If you have a genuine passion and affinity for making a difference and contributing to the Otago region, then we want to hear from you.
