About the company

Calder Stewart is a national construction and property company specialising in design and build services to the industrial, commercial, rural and public markets. Founded in 1955, Calder Stewart has a thirst for building innovation, pride in traditional business values and a commitment to 'build a strong future.'  With a vertically integrated business structure, Calder Stewart is proud to have its own reinforcing, precast concrete and structural steel divisions which is unique to their building process.

To ensure that Calder Stewart can continue to be a leader in smarter building solutions and achieve its strategic and commercial objectives, the business needs a talented and proactive General Counsel to join the team. Is this you?

About the opportunity

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (a direct report to the Board) and working integrally with business leaders throughout Calder Stewart, the General Counsel will provide legal input into contractual negotiations, implementation and management to ensure the efficient and effective running of all contractual obligations, including assisting the business to manage commercial disputes. In doing so, the General Counsel will effectively identify, assess and mitigate legal risk for the Group.

This is a key executive role that requires the General Counsel to demonstrate effective leadership internally to the business and externally to the industry and take a focus on developing and managing strong working relationships with customers, stakeholders and suppliers to achieve results.

About you

To be successful as the General Counsel, you will hold a New Zealand legal practicing certificate with a minimum 10 years’ PQE and a deep understanding of construction law and relevant New Zealand standards related to construction contract documents. You will be a natural problem solver and will combine your legal expertise with pragmatism and commercial nous to provide advice and workable solutions.

An exceptional communicator with strong relationship building capability; people will describe you as a leader – confidently developing relationships, coaching colleagues and influencing outcomes towards achievement of business goals. In return, you will be rewarded with the opportunity to shape this executive level role, progress your career and be part of a supportive, family owned and operated business with strong links to the heartland of New Zealand.
